  • Beschreibung: In Alexandria Egypt, in 1933, the great poet Constantine Cavafy (Dimitris Kataleifos) is dying in the hospital. A young fan of his, who wants to write his biography, records his last words. From this point onwards, we witness a series of flashback to various periods in the poet’s life. Born in Alexandria, he grows up in the shadow of his mother (Maya Lymperopoulou), who loved him dearly. They lead a life of leisure until the Arab rebellion, which forces them to seek shelter in Constantinople. There, the young poet first comes into contact with his rich family heritage and first acknowledges his homosexual tendencies. Upon the family’s return to Alexandria, they lose their estate, and Cavafy himself is obliged to work at the British Water Company, a post he retains until his death. Two events, in particular, pained Cavafy the most and marked him for life: his mother’s death and being rejected by the young poet, Mavroudis, with whom he was in love.
