Description: From the North Pole to the Black Sea: filming Satua Sammosta, a Finnish-Soviet joint production. Aleksandr Ptushko’s film Satua Sammosta, based on the Finnish national epic Kalevala, begins filming near Heinola in the summer of 1957. Kustaa Vilkuna and Väinö Kaukonen act as folklore experts for the film. Film crew and equipment on board moving vessels. From the waters around Heinola to Seurasaari Island in Helsinki. Holger Harrivirta is the project’s Finnish director, and Risto Orko watches intently as filming takes place. Over one thousand extras take part in the crowd scenes. The next filming location is Kuusamo’s wilderness. The film crew journeys by boat and on foot across demanding terrain. Footage of Lappish landscapes alight with autumn colours, filmed from the peak of Pyhätunturi Fell. The set pieces built in the Mosfilm studios are so large they would not fit into any Finnish studio. The Mosfilm studio is also suited for the scenes with Ilmarinen’s forge, requiring special technical features. The cliffs along the shores of the Black Sea represent the kingdom of Louhi, the Mistress of the North. Finnish experts make sure that the film stays true to folklore. Filming continues in Karelia.
