Description:Emilia and Villalba (Margarita Xirgu and Ricardo Puga) have had a happy marriage until the murder of the prostitute Lilí casted a shadow over it. Her brother, Augusto, is accused of the crime and sentenced to prison. Emilia receives the terrible news by letter through Doctor Morales, who has received a mail from Augusto in which he pleads not guilty and implores help. Request that faces Villalba’s firm opposition to get involved with a matter related to a courtier. Dr. Morales answers the letter of the accused informing him about the husband’s veto and his impossibility to intercede for him, since in the past he also wooed Emilia. Villalba’s attempts to cheer his wife up turned out to be unsuccessful. One day, Augusto climbs up the window of his sister’s room and tells her that he has escaped and expects to flee the country. With Villalba’s arrival, Emilia has to make up that she has been attacked by a burglar with the purpose of giving her brother time to get away from the house. Augusto, incognito, visits the Doctor and they prepare a plan. On occasion of a visit through the countryside, Emilia meets her brother, who has decided to walk across the border. On surprising her in the distance with an unknown man, Villalba interprets it as an infidelity. He thinks it is about the same man it was accused of burglary by his wife, so he decides to break up the marriage. Nevertheless, they keep together before the rest and live in the same house out of consideration for the social conveniences. Doctor Morales meets Lucía, the servant of the murdered woman, in the hospital and accommodates her in his house with the purpose of achieving a statement of the facts. After several unsuccessful attempts to confession, the young woman tells the truth about the murder. Morales informs Augusto and seizes the opportunity in a gathering to explain what happened to Emilia. Villalba surprises them in an isolated room and believing himself deceived, he challenges the Doctor to a duel.
Emilia, informed by the Doctor of the challenge, intercedes for him with her husband but she fails to avoid it. When the duel comes, Augusto visits his sister and shows her a letter in which, with a detailed description of the facts, Doctor Morales accuses Villalba of the murder and of the purchase of Lucía’s silence. Emilia and Augusto arrive where the duel is taking place in time to avoid it and to accuse Villalba of the murder. Discovered, he commits suicide. Emilia falls exhausted by all the suffering into Morales’ arms.
