Description: Špilberk is a picturesque castle dominating the modern city of Brno (Czech Republic). Over the course of time it has been a fortress, prison, museum and a place for torture. During the Inquisition prisoners passed days in eternal darkness without windows. In the 1800’s, Austria kept political opponents from all over Europe here, including Silvio Pellico, Piero Maroncelli and other Italians of the Giovine Italia and Carbonari movements. During the last war, the Nazis changed it into a concentration camp and one of the wings became a gas chamber, but the war had ended before they were able to put their plans into action.
