>> View CNC collections on EFG The CNC was created in 1969 on the initiative of the Minister of Culture, André Malraux, so that the State could take over the inventory and conservation of old films, including nitrate films. Since then, the collections of old films have continued to grow. In addition to voluntary deposits, donations and acquisitions, the legal deposit of films was introduced in 1977 and became the responsibility of the CNC in 1992.
The CNC has many missions, including the collection, conservation, inventory, cataloguing, preservation, restoration and promotion of heritage films. At national and international level, the CNC French Film Archives take part in initiatives to protect and promote film heritage. The CNC French Film Archives ensure the preservation of more than 100,000 films, a collection made up equally of fiction, feature films, short films and documentaries.
