Since February 2013, the European Film Gateway provides access to around 3,000 historical films related to the First World War. European film archives contributing to the European Film Gateway digitised significant parts of their First World War collections as part of the EU-funded EFG1914 project. In time for the centenary of the First World War in 2014, all the films digitised as part of the project became searchable through the European Film Gateway. To find out about the terms of re-use and to purchase high quality files of the films, please contact the archives providing them.
The films cover various genres such as newsreels, documentaries, fiction and propaganda and are of particular importance as only about 20% of the total silent film production has survived in film heritage institutions. The films searchable through the European Film Gateway are therefore an essential part of these remaining moving image records.
